Paid Spring Internship - Reconnecting America, Oakland

Reconnecting America is the managing partner of the Center for Transit-Oriented Development, the only national nonprofit effort funded by Congress to promote best practices in transit- oriented development. Reconnecting America is also a founding partner of Transportation for America, a broad coalition of housing, environmental, equal opportunity, public health, urban planning, transportation and other organizations focused on creating a 21st century national transportation program.


Position Overview

Reconnecting America is looking for a motivated, self-guided individual with knowledge, experience, and interest in transit-oriented development, affordable housing, community development and transportation and an interest in engaging in data analysis, creating maps, and developing materials for our technical assistance, education, policy, and communications programs. Specific tasks the intern may work on include:

  • Collecting local area plans and synthesizing information from these plans;
  • Analyzing and data mining reports and online resources to translate data into tables and GIS-ready formats;
  • Supporting staff with graphic representation of information, in Adobe Illustrator and PowerPoint formats;
  • Searching for high quality photographs and images for reports; and
  • Possible short-term, targeted research and/or analysis projects.


  • A Bachelors degree and some graduate work in city planning, geography, architecture, public policy, or other related field
  • Computer proficiency; knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint) and the Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, In Design) a requirement
  • Proficiency in GIS mapping and related analysis functions is desired
  • Comfort with data analysis and working with large data sets
  • Understanding of transit-oriented development principles and strategies
  • Self-directed, resourceful and results-oriented
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills. Ability to work productively, professionally and respectfully with coworkers and outside partners
  • Excellent research and analytical skills
  • Motivated, enthusiastic and committed to the organizationʼs mission

The position is part to full-time (20 - 40 hours/week) and available starting February 2012. Hourly wage is commensurate with experience.
